Last night I watched The Call of Cthulhu, the silent movie based on Lovecraft's story. It was made by the amazing folks at the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society, who, from what I understand, got their start doing live-action roleplaying for The Call of Cthulhu game. The movie is awesome: you get derelict ships at sea, strange dreamscapes, a police raid on a cult in the bayous of Louisiana, and even Great Cthulhu himself, all rendered with lighting, cardboard, stop-motion animation, and a hell of a lot of imagination. I loved this movie. The special features are also a treat: in the deleted scenes segment, you get to hear what the actors were actually saying as they gesticulated for the cameras. "The dreams even came during lunchtime! All I wanted were Sun Chips, and all I got were the black skies of R'lyeh!"
Check out their website, too: they even have a Cthulhu-themed Christmas album, for god's sake! It is so worth a visit.

And while I'm waiting for that: Mike Cisco has recommended a film calmed Out of Mind, which is a relatively recent Canadian film which mixes a faux documentary of Lovecraft with dramatized scenes from his stories. I'm still trying to track it down, but Cisco vouches for the actor who plays Lovecraft, which counts for a lot in my book.
As far as these guys go, I seem to remember reading somewhere, fairly recently, that they're tackling "A Whisperer in the Darkness" next -- and this time it'll have sound.
